Valentine’s Day

So it’s that time of year again, no not New Year but Valentine’s Day. The day couples get all mushy with a box of chocolates and a card to say ‘I love you’ and singletons getting all depressed with a bottle of wine for one close to hand. It’s only January and shops everywhere are already advertising the most romantic day of the year.

Every year you see the same cute little teddy bear and big boxes of gorgeous chocolates stacked on every shelf. But what is Valentine’s Day all about? A reason to receive last minute flowers and sometimes disappointment as your other half can’t make it. Or is it about wining and dining the one you love to show your appreciation of your relationship?

Whatever reason people may celebrate Valentine’s Day is it a little overrated? Women getting all made up to look perfect for their partners, people cooking a wonderful dinner or making reservations at their favourite restaurant. Twitter is already trending Valentine’s Day with over 100 tweets per minute. With people like @Eckelberger tweeting about how talking about Valentine’s Day is getting all exciting and @TheReilBrady hoping to have a Valentine this year, is Valentine’s Day really a day everyone hopes for? Hoping for that one day in the year where everyone has a reason to express their feelings towards one another in order to feel loved.

But surely no one needs a day to force themselves to look perfect and cook an amazing meal. Surely both people in the relationship should make an effort every day. Do people really forget the reason why they fell in love with their partners in the first place? What’s the point in spending £30 or more on little gifts that will only end up in a box under the stairs? Because we all want that one special day to ourselves looking and feeling beautiful. Us ladies want to spend hours in front of the mirror to make an effort and even though men might hate the idea of being all mushy with their other half, they secretly love the fact they have someone to share it with. They love rushing to the nearest garage to purchase there it’s-never-to-late flowers. And they definitely love the affection they receive.

So it’s that time of year again. Valentine’s Day. A day for couples to express their love for each other and singletons to wish they had an admirer or to simply sleep for the whole day until it’s over.  Either way Valentine’s Day is one of the most talked about days in the year. Enjoy.

  1. I totally agree with this! What’s thoughtful about any random card/flowers/chocolate every year? It’s a nice day to spend together but too much money is spent! xx
